To achieve sustainable financing for TB in eight supported States (Bauchi, Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Taraba States), DGI Consult with funding from USAID TB LON 1&2 project led by KNCV has commenced series of activities aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity for TB budget advocacy and integrating TB into the benefits package of State Social Health Insurance Schemes (SSHIS).
Since the commencement of project implementation in October 2021, DGI Consult has obtained the buy-in of key stakeholders in the health and finance sectors and set the stage for Domestic Resource Mobilization (DRM) for TB in the supported states. The Health Financing Technical Working Group (TWG) which is central to advocacy for improved government health allocation and expenditure was set up in states where it was non-existent and reactivated where it was already set up. The TWG has since swung into action towards improving the funding landscape for health in general and TB in particular.
As a result of the engagements in the States, a remarkable increase in TB allocation has been secured for the 2022 fiscal year in most of the supported States. The initial engagements also provided a good opportunity for deepening the knowledge of stakeholders on the concept of Universal Health Coverage, sustainable financing for TB, and the processes of integrating TB into the health insurance benefits package. In addition, we supported some of the state health insurance agencies to develop a TB integration roadmap and a coverage trajectory.
