Healthcare activities account for at least 5% of global greenhouse gas emission and the sector bears a huge brunt of climate change with increased disease prevalence. As a case in point, climate change is responsible for additional 5 million cases of malaria globally. However, health sector has not significantly benefited from climate adaptation financing opportunities to address the disease burden caused by the effect of climate change. As part of efforts towards promoting intersectoral mainstreaming of climate action in Nigeria, DGI Consult team had a fruitful engagement with the newly appointed Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe to discuss strategic areas of collaboration to foster climate change action in the health sector.
The meeting which held on Friday August 30th 2024 was an opportunity to learn about numerous initiatives being introduced by the NCCC under its new leadership towards revitalizing climate action in Nigeria. DGI Consult also highlighted its efforts towards strengthening inter-sectoral collaboration for promoting a climate-resilient health system by ensuring effective synergy between the NCCC and the health sector actors.
As the NCCC is set to introduce new initiatives to adapt and mitigate the impact of climate change through the involvement of all sectors of government for sustainable socio-economic development, it is obvious that climate action won’t be business as usual in Nigeria.
DGI Consult is excited to contribute to efforts towards building a climate-resilient nation, especially a climate-resilient health system. DGI will work closely with the NCCC and the health sector stakeholders to convene a Climate Change and Health Summit aimed at forging multi-sectoral collaboration for climate action in the health sector and explore partnership for unlocking financing for climate action in the health sector.
