As part of efforts towards bridging family planning commodity financing gaps in Nigeria through private sector participation, the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) organized a 1-day stakeholders’ workshop to disseminate the findings of the family planning private sector financing scooping mission conducted across five (5) States in Nigeria (Lagos, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna and Nasarawa). This is an initiative funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), aimed at transforming public-private partnerships (PPPs) by implementing innovative PPP models, focusing on private sector engagement in family planning commodity financing.
The BMGF in partnership with PSHAN launched the initiative in 2023 in the five implementing states. This was followed by entry-level engagement with stakeholders in the states and the scooping exercise, conducted through desk review and key informant interviews with stakeholders to identify potential family planning financing models.
The I-day stakeholders’ workshop, which was held on Thursday, 18th January, 2024, was attended by key players in the family planning ecosystem, which include donors, implementing partners, and stakeholders from government health MDAs in the 5 implementing states, among others. Through presentations, plenary and group work sessions, stakeholders disseminated and thoroughly scrutinised the identified financing models for family planning in the states. The session also stimulated conversations among stakeholders on the recommended public-private financing models in the states that have the potential for scalability. Anticipated challenges and what to do differently to successfully implement such models were also discussed. The stakeholders identified viable and scalable groups of private financing models, including catalytic, blended financing and philanthropic financing models.
The BMGF through PSHAN will further engage the States to implement the potential family planning financing models identified with the recommendations of stakeholders highlighted during the workshop.
